Thanks. This is helpful. We are planning to go to Rincon..flights to SJU are much cheaper than to BQN, so the problem is how to get from SJ to Rincon area. How much would a taxi cost?
Thanks for any suggestions. Don’t really want to drive.

I would definitely recommend checking out Rincon. It is nothing like San Juan, in fact, many Sanjuaneros visit Rincon to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. And there you have the differences and the pros/cons all wrapped into one sentence. Rincon = small town, slow pace, cold beer, hammocks, snorkeling, uncrowded beaches. San Juan = big city, fast pace, expensive resort hotels, big casinos, cold beer, hammocks, snorkeling, crowded beaches.

Hi there- great info! Me and a friend are traveling to Puerto Rico in Sept. and are debating on staying in San Juan the whole time or splitting our week between there and Rincon… This post was helpful on driving time, but would you recommend doing that in general? Is there a good site you could point me to that explains the differences, pros/cons of different places? Also, should we be at all concerned about it being the “rainy season”? Thanks so much in advance- we could use all the advice you could give!!!

Hi Sharon:

If your plans are to stay in San Juan, I would do the taxi thing. Renting a car gives you more freedom to get out of town, but if you are going to be seeing the sights in San Juan like Old Town, hitting up the restaurants/bars and hanging on the beach all day, renting a car will be a headache. Parking is a pain, Puerto Rico driving takes some getting used to and getting around San Juan can be confusing…especially after a few drinks.

hi-i googled “driving in san juan puerto Rico” and your site came up. I have a question and you maybe you could help me, my husband and i will staying in san juan april 4-7. we are deciding if we should just rent a car when we get to town (late arrival on the 4th) What would you recommend? rent the car or just get around with taxi’s? the car rate seemed pretty low, but someone told me driving is scary around the city? whata ya think? rent a car or not? thanks sharon

Yes, we thought about kidnapping Junior and shipping him down to Puerto Rico, except he is too big for any dog crates and buying a tiger crate was going to be too expensive…He’s a BIG boy!

Are you talking about Junior, the Bull Mastiff on Summers blog? She was dog sitting him for a friend of ours in California. He sure would be a good dog in Puerto Rico, but more so at night…he’d probably sit around all day from the intense heat. But…he was purchased in California.
