I think this bookshelf/desk would look pretty cool in the guest bedroom. I wonder if it would be strong enough to use as a ladder up to the loft? Would that be weird or cool? Here is some info on this bookcase and desk combo from Crate and Barrel:
“The next generation in our popular leaning desk-shelf system - now in a sleek mahogany finish. Ladder-style design crafted of solid mahogany and engineered wood secures against the wall for maximum stability (hardware included). Sturdy open desk has two shelves and workspace for a laptop. Five-shelf bookcase works well alone or in multiples (two shown here with desk). Also available in white.”
Each bookcase is $129 and the desk set up is also $129. $387 as shown (2 shelves and 1 desk).
I think this shelf/desk combo and a couch with a pull out bed (plus the bed in the loft) would make for a pretty sweet guest room…

This desk / shelf set up is really cool. The guest bedroom isn’t that big so the open space behind the shelves will be perfect because it won’t look like it is taking up so much space.
Without checking this desk out in person, I don’t know if it would be strong enough to be a ladder too. If it is, we could bolt it to the wall at the top. If not, we always have the option of building the same thing from scratch (we have the tools and plenty of experienced craftsman) with a ladder on the side and a little handrail.
Alright, guys, this is weird — I originally surfed onto Summer’s page re: Costa Rica [Witches Rock] — then saw the, um, disturbing Sex Dolls thing, which I commented on.
For whatever reasons I cannot explain, your PR house project has intriqued me…perhaps because I live in FL and am dying to get my husband to find employment on a gorgeous island where we can live the rest of our happy lives, raise gorgeous kids, live simply, give back, etc…
Anyhow, I feel kinda weird checking on your progress and “cheering” you on, because, well, I don’t know you…but, whatever, you’re putting it out there so I feel compelled to comment…!!!
Okay, to the point [really, I was getting there!!!], Target.com has many, many leaning bookshelves that are quite nice and 1/3 of the price of C&B. I purchased one [they have a GREAT return policy if you’re not satisifed] and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. Granted, it’s only a bookshelf, so you’ll have to get your carpenters to do the desk portion…but, dude, wayyyyy cheaper than C&B and same quality!!!
And, now, I feel weird that I am reaching out when I do not know you guys…but I really do hope your house-building goes well…it will help me convince my hubby that we should do the same!!!
Keep it up and best of luck — I’ll be checking!
Is this totally weird?! eeks.
sk
very cool. I just stack my books on the floor. I could see how this would work.
PS - the stuff on the website is way better than in the store. Trust…
SK:
It’s not weird at all. Admit it, this stuff is fun. Summer and I follow a bunch of blogs, regularly comment and have become friends with many of the publishers. It’s the way of the future…just don’t blow off your friends to read our blog…that’s when it turns into creepy…like those dolls.
Thanks for the input on Target’s bookshelves…we’ll have to check them out…AND Target ships to Puerto Rico.
