Stefan and I have been really busy and will have some pictures to share in the next couple of days, but let me tell you this…The freaks come out at night, here in Puerto Rico.
And by “freaks”, I mean BIG, creepy crawly creatures.
I was working in my office last night (which is downstairs) and I saw something in the doorway out of the corner of my eye. I squinted to get a better look and thought it might just be some construction debris (we have plenty of that…), but upon further inspection, it turned out to be a HUGE toad. Seriously it had to have been a couple of pounds, at least.
I am working late again tonight and I went out to get my shoes that I left on the front porch. Apparently some tarantula had other plans for my pink Pumas, because he was looking longingly at them when I opened the front door.
Screens for the office windows has just moved up the priority list…

Screens and ice cold AC are what works best to keep them out of my house
Another tip, get an electrified bug racked- lots of fun getting rid of the creepy crawlies that way. Bear in mind, you live in a tropical island, it’s gonna happen… even with screens, I’ve woken up with a Coqui singing in my bedroom
Oh HELL no! I definitely prefer the Michigan mosquitoes and flies… annoying, but can’t snuggle up to me in bed at night. AHHH!
Robert - We actually have an electrified bug tennis racquet that we can swat all the flying pests with. It really is pretty funny :). We don’t have AC or screens on the bottom floor, so we’ll have to work on that one. We are currently sleeping in the loft, which is the highest point of the house, so if anything wanted to crawl into bed with us, it would have to be pretty determined.
Jashana - I hear ya. It’s definately different, but hopefully the creepy crawlies will stay out once the house is finished. As long as I don’t have to deal with cockroaches, I’m okay. Those are the only things that really gross me out!
Maybe I won’t come and visit after all. =P
Seriously, tarantulas? Only seen them in the pet store, not out and about on the loose. I suppose those crocs shoes are good for peeking in from the outside, so you don’t squish ‘em inside your shoe.
Once the house is completed it will get a lot better, it happens to pretty much every new house that it is build out in the country…unfortunately you will get the flying cockroaches once in a while, you will learn how to fight them with your flip-flops!….you’ll get used to it
Screens all over the house are highly recomended.

Bulbboy - Hahah….Good point. No wonder everyone around here wears those Croc shoes. Everytime I pull a pair of sneakers out of the closet, I carefully carry them to the porch and THROW them as far as I can (just in case there is anything nesting inside). Then I pick them up one by one, cautiously peek inside and then whack them against the steps one more time. Just in case :). I think I may be traumatized by the time I stuck my foot in my shoes when I was a kid and crunched something. I figured it was just a sticker, so I stuck my hand in and pulled out a gross stink bug. EWWW!
Dorian - That’s hilarious. Fighting off flying cockroaches with flip flops! I recently read up on centipedes, and found out that they eat cockroaches. Quite honestly, I would prefer centipedes over roaches any day.
We just put in screen in the downstairs, so hopefully that will help.
