In Puerto Rico, if you wear a green shirt on a Thursday, that is a supposed to be a symbol of your gay pride. At least that is what we’ve heard from a few Puerto Ricans.
I certainly noticed an abundance of gay guys in San Juan, when we stayed at the El San Juan hotel. I was not expecting to see so many gay Puerto Ricans, maybe because I’m used to Mexico, which is very machismo. ![]()

Puerto Rico isn’t as accepting of homosexuality as the mainland US, but it tolerates it.
Yes, I figured as much after Jerry told us that the big burned out building on the way to Mayaguez was a popular gay bar until someone torched it…
Still, I see a lot of gay pride in Puerto Rico!
Tons of pride here… sadly not enough acceptance
San Juan is a bit better about it, but quite behind the mainland.
and Isla Verde is not the gay mecca of San Juan…Condado is! Things have change a lot in PR during the last last ten years….it is very interesting hearing my nieces and nephew talking about their gay friends…they are only in high school! that didn’t happened when I was in school!
Don’t get fooled about our culture…women run the Island….they have the real cojones! I think machismo in PR is a myth!
Cheers! Dorian
HAH! I just googled this while discussing it with my wife. She didn’t believe me and found this site too. It all started with my son liking green shirts and telling my Mom about it. Does anyone else on the planet believe this? Last time I lived in Puerto Rico my “outed” friends used to wear green shirts on Thursday on purpose.
