Car Insurance in Puerto Rico – Marbete
One of my buddies called me this morning, he needs to borrow one of our trucks because his Marbete is expired and he got pulled over by the Rincon Police yesterday. He bought his truck last December and his Marbete was good for one year. Normally, when your Marbete is up, you get a letter in the mail with instructions of how much to pay to renew it. You then go down to the collecteria, pay the amount due and take your vehicle to an inspection station, show them the receipt and have the vehicle inspected. Then you go back to the colecteria, show them that you passed inspection and they give you a fresh sticker for the front of your vehicle (it’s like an inspection sticker but it also proves you have insurance).
I am not entirely clear on how Marbete works, but it is my understanding that Marbete in Puerto Rico is also your liability and collision insurance. With out it, you are not covered if you are in an accident and it is a very big deal to the police if you don’t have your sticker. Although my buddy did not get a ticket (his kids were screaming in the back so the cop told him to go) the first ticket is $250 and they will tow you vehicle.
His adventure today is will include borrowing one of my trucks and driving out to the dealer where he bought the truck and seeing if the dealer has the paperwork (meaning it was never officially put in his name). Hopefully the dealer is still in business or his family car is going to be off the road for a while.

Hello guys!
The marbete is not just an insurance is also a robbery from the government, lol. The papers that you mention is the vehicle license and there you pay ACAA (in case you have an accident and have injuries they give you medical services), transit fines if you have any and the insurance as you mentioned. I live in the metro area and you don’t have to buy your marbete in a colecturia. Some gas stations inspect the car and sell the marbete. Of course it will cost you $5 extra, but that’s better than going to the colecturía were the line never ends. Good luck to your friend with his marbete!

Robbery is so true. Where else can you buy $3000 worth of liability coverage for $100. Increase your coverage to $300,000 with CIACO for only another $200.
Lets see, $3000 for $100 or $297,000 for $200. Outrageous!

Robbery??? Are you kidding me?? LOL, I think people in Puerto Rico take that for granted because they dont know what u need to do in most of the mainland US.
In PA & most other states, you must pay for inspection & registration every year. That alone will cost you more than your Marbete. & that doesnt give you any insurance. Then, by law, you need auto insurance. Liabilty alone will cost you anywhere from $70-150 per month. Believe me PR’s car policies are a dream come true compared to the rest of the US!!

I completly agree with Cris. When I lived in SJ I had a car accident and the ACAA ended up paying for my treatment! can you believe that?! Chiropractor and everything! Very very sweet! In MN I pay $150 for the tab license every year and then $110 every month for insurance that has a $500 deductible…don’t even mention heath insurance, I fantisatic $2,500 deductible….that’s why I drink a lot…lol!

Car insurance is definatly cheaper here, no argument there! I think paying $100 for only $3000 of liability coverage is robbery compaired to paying $200 for $297,000 of liability (and medical) coverage. If I could buy from a privite company the same coverage that the goverment offers for $100 I would probaly only pay $10.

Wow Cris!! I didn’t know that. I was thinking of running away from Puerto Rico, but now I think I should stay here. I have to admit that puertorricans (including me), are always complaining, jaja…

Oh ok, I guess if you look at it how Jeff said, that the govt robs you because the private companies give you more than that does make sense..
But Hey Carol dont change your plans just because of what I said.. however its always good to know how it will be before you get there

Jeff – you are so wrong! But, of course, I would like to have that $300k policy from CAICO at $200, if they would be so kind as to offer that ridiculous price for a year coverage! You don’t get $300k insurance for $200, unless you are paying that amount on a monthly basis, my friend. You pay to the government $99/year for $3k, but if you want to get $300k, depending on the car and its year, you would be paying at least $1,000/year. Recheck your sources. My insurance company is CAICO (which is the best deal I have found in the Island) and I pay much less insurance premium for my 2005 car in Puerto Rico than what I am paying for my 2002 car in RI. Perhaps you need to call CAICO and ask them to explain it better.
