Our Family Is Growing
We haven’t posted too many pictures of us lately, so after uploading the last few pics of the master bathroom door, I figured I would post some pictures so ya’ll can check out Summer. In about 7 weeks we’ll have a new addition to the family and we’ll start blasting you guys with photos of our daughter. We don’t know what she looks like yet, but she knows my voice from stories and conversations I have with Summers prego belly. Now, when I read or talk to her she starts moving around and kicking. It’s amazing.
Summer is 32 weeks pregnant in these pictures. The first picture is in the living room right before we went to the beach on Sunday to fish for lobsters, relax and get away from our computers. We have both been working a lot but aren’t complaining. We love our jobs, working at home and talking office politics at the water cooler. Ok, just kidding. Not much politics going on in our office, just work. Without further delay:

Hi, i actually live in rincon (barrio pueblo sect. korea)everyone knows me as cuco the plumber.I cant make out where is your house located,but it really looks nice.Im usually in the puntas area every guesthouse owner knows me , well almost all of them.But anyway if you ever need of my service or assistance with anything you can always count on me.Just email me or ask around you know that in rincon you just say my name and you well be directed to my house.Well have a goodone see when i see yaah!.

Wow, I am thinking of moving to PR, I have one more year here in Cali, my son is in his last year of highschool, I am very interested in hearing more about the process and following your story, congratulations on the baby and your new home!

Every time I reconsider moving to PR your website comes up in the search engine, Its been a year since I last visited here. My hubby is a native californian and the only thing that is keeping us from PR is my husbands language barrier but its going to be an adventure Im sure once we make it official. Congrats on the baby you carry very gracefully.

This is for Natalia… Think of Summer and Stefan moving to PR with a “language barrier”. There are other blogging couples where neither one is a native Spanish-speaker. And they have adapted EXTREMELY well. Steve (my non-Spanish speaking Californian husband) and I will be moving there soon. I have the same concerns as you, and look to these guys for inspiration and optimism.:) Fran

I am so glad you are doing well my husband and me are moving to puerto rico next month. We are puerto rican but hae liven in new jersey all of our lives. My father owns a home in toa baja and I feel that we should take advantage since we do not own a home here and will not own one any time soon. How is it there now is life good, hows the weather and did it take long for you to adjust to the weather.

White settlers coming to PR and doing the damage that they’ve always done historically. Sadly, no jobs in PR leads to emigration of middle class so that more GRINGOS can come and buy land and build an exagerated/ridiculous house. If people following this blog think this is too cute, think about how this affects the culture of its people. Americans have ameliorated the culture, bringing the nasty fast processed food to this island plus a number of issues not worth mentioning in this blog because of the sleaziness it’s made out of.

Steven, Imagine all the MONEY (Aka JOBS) we pour into the economy.
Imagine the time and care we take with the land and it’s resources by planting gardens and fruit trees, and as long as your talking about nasty American food.. get the MARGARINE out of the Puerto Rican food (or do you like eating something that is one compound away from being plastic). (sorry Stefan and Summer…hope all it well in PR. Salty Walt told us not to come down cuz it’s just too damn hot)!

“Americans have ameliorated the culture” -Ameliorate means to make something better. Steven, I think you might need a dictionary before you go on your next rant generalizing whole communities -unless you enjoy using words you do not understand the meanings of.
As far as your topic itself, too much growth, too fast and for the wrong reasons (often for a quick buck by people who don’t live in or want to live in the area in question) can cause a lot of problems anywhere (look at the Coal towns of Appalachia if you want an example in the US proper) and certainly there might be people -usually huge corporations- who want to come to Rincon just to build a huge 20 story hotel resort and make it like Cancun. They just take the money and leave (exploit might be the word you’re looking for).
But from what I’ve read about Rincon and especially its Surfrider’s Foundation, it has been one of the more progressive areas of Puerto Rico creating the Tres Palmas Reserve and prohibiting destructive building practices that can damage the reef and coastline while preserving the historical culture and flavor of the area. Many of these people fighting for these things just happened to be white and live in Puerto Rico. This is their home too; they want it to be the best it can be!

Good God Steven is PISSED! i don’t blame him for being regretful of the Gringos or the Grin-gas in my case, but the truth of the matter is…… I did not personally invade your countryside.. I grew up in a town here in America(and i was pretty sure PR was also America) where the only jobs available were seasonal .. and ALL of the business owners imported their hired workers from PR! i know it sounds crazy, but us gringos and gringos were out sourced to our Puerto Rican Cousins. We did not get those jobs, but we did get to love the people that came, we did not hold a grudge against them for taking those jobs. After all it was the EMPLOYERS that gave those jobs to them. We did not resent them for it….. SO as a Gringa.. I am moving to PR.. to Rincon in particular, for many reasons, the beach, and the PEOPLE that I grew up with, they will remember me.. I will remember them.. I totally understand being skeptical of Americanised people.. but from me you will not get that..Let us realize that the only person that can take the PLASTIC from your food is you! I refuse it, won’t eat it, and I will hold that same standard in PR! I hope you decide to do the same and not blame it on anyone else when you choose to ingest it.

Stefan, don’t take Steven’s remarks personally. He has it backward. As a native Puerto Rican, I moved to a place where people don’t trash the land, don’t abuse animals, don’t drive on the shoulder, respect the privacy and personal space of others, where I can get a variety of healthy food choices, etc., etc., etc. Steven (why the Anglo name??) speaks from a position of ignorance and envy. He envies who you are, what you have, and what you stand for. As a mature adult, I find your blog far from sleazy! Your blog and those of other west coast bloggers of stateside origin are my favorite blogs because they make me more nostalgic for the Puerto Rico of my dreams than any native Puerto Rican blogs (which often hatred-laced). I will be back one day to live my dream on my island, and indulge in tasty but unhealthy Puerto Rican food, which I’m sure will negatively affect my health. I will welcome statesiders who help make it a better place and steer clear of sorry people like Steven. Fran

What’s up with the ALL CAPS? lol. Relax. Just for the record, the Rincon chapter of Surfrider is strictly a volunteer organization comprised of locals (be it “Whites,” Boricuas, whomever)from surrounding municipalities. They DONATE their time and energy towards preserving the ocean and marine life of PR as well as the other activities that Cassie K mentioned in her July 7th post. I should know, my husband interned (meaning unpaid) the entire summer at Surfrider Rincon. As for Vieques and what happened in ‘99 to Mr. Sanes – -that was a terrible tragedy. And, the damage done environmentally can never be fully rectified (if at all); however, maybe if YOU donated YOUR time and energy you wouldn’t be so bitter, you might actually help your island, and gain some perspective as well. Ok, I’m off my soapbox.

In response to your question, I am not associated with Surfrider (yet!), but I do believe they help out in all beach areas that they can. Here is a report that includes the Vieques area.
From my search online, it looks like Surfrider has only been around as an organization since 1984 but has made a lot of progress in that time.
Alicia is right, you need to learn to type without all the CAPITAL LETTERS! In computer correspondence it is like yelling.

As a amtter of fact log to my Facebook page and i will give it to you.Thanks for the Sufrider article .But from all the letters i wrote in the past Alicia and you only commplain about my orthography no one else.I really respect you in becoming bilingual thats mean you want to be part of us.You really want to become boricua. Thats like hoosier in Indiana or tar heel in North Carolina because a lot Gringos dont want to be like us they want Rincon and other areas be like South Africa. Next time try to write me a letter in spanich it will encourage a lot of people doing the same thing
