Hola from Rincon

Author: Stefan | Filed under: Babies, Plants, Sydney James Rest

We’ve been really tied up with the baby, work and the usual life stuff…but Sydney wanted to say HOLA!

Does anyone know what kind of plant this is that Sydney and Summer and standing next to? It is really cool looking, almost prehistoric. Is this the plant that killed off the dinosaurs?

Pretty sure it is an agave – there are many different types. I’ve got a couple different types in the yard and they make lots of babies. They have needles on the ends of each leaf that you can snip off with finger nail clippers.

Sydney is growing well in PR, every time I see a new photo he’s getting bigger like the plants there. The link I’ve add is for the agava.

    I hope it will help.

I have small ones in front of our house, and thanks Katrina for that idea about snipping the needles off, one of my older neighbors said that I should put egg shells on them! NOT!

Agave or century plant. I guess it blooms every 100 years. My husband tried to get rid of one using a chain saw. Apparently he was allergic to it and swelled up so badly i had to call the poison control people for advice. He can drink tequila with no problem so who knows…

I’m from New Mexico and without needle it sure looks like an Aloe plant. But, probably not.

I’d say Agave unless there were no thorns then I’d say aloe but in PR you never know. A local Puerto Ricano could tell you, I’m sure.

Sydney is growing so fast! And is it the picture, or is she already developing a Puerto Rican tan? She is too cute. Fran

Doug says it is def. a blue agave. watch out if you try to remove one or cut into it at all…. the juice inside is poison and will make you break out in hives and is also pretty painful. you will have to cover head to toe to remove:)

It seems like aloe. My grandpa has one in his backyard in Rio Piedras.
