Random Grocery Post

Have you ever wondered what $46 at the grocery store will get you in Rincon Puerto Rico? I went in the grocery store for a few things today, and this is what I walked out with. This is what $46 gets you at the Econo grocery store in Puerto Rico.

That’s Econo? Wow I want to shop with you, how’d you find nice looking veg there!

I bring my own (Traider Joe’s) Peanut butter when I come down. Can’t pay the $7 a jar price there.

Nice produce but expensive. Why do you buy eggs if you have chickens? Also you need a banana tree. My family in PR never have to buy bananas.

    Wow, not a whole lot.

I’ve heard that the bananas aren’t even PR bananas at Econo. They are imported.

You could get all of that, in New Jersey, for like $22.00!

Yes, food here in PR is generally expensive. On the good side, we are getting better produce in the last couple of years. When we moved here, Econo only carried green, flavorless tomatoes. Now it’s slightly better. Edwards is the only grocery store in Rincon that I will shop at, The owners are amazing and actually start carrying food that you suggest. Whenever I am in California, I ship 50lb boxes of Trader Joes food to PR. Even with the shipping cost, it’s cheaper and better than PR groceries.

Why are we buying eggs and bananas? Good question! We do have 14 chickens, but chickens typically don’t lay eggs in the winter. We could force them to lay by putting a light in their coop, but naturally they need a break from egg production so I figure we should give them one (and it makes me feel guilty about eating eggs in the winter as I know I’m eating eggs from chickens that are unhealthily forced to lay eggs. Poor girls!). As for bananas, we have over a dozen banana trees and a few have green bananas right now, but it has been pretty dry, so they are slow producing right now.

And for those potatoes up there? I recently found out how easy it is to grow potatoes in PR, so pretty soon we won’t be buying those either!

I have chickens and I always HATE when I am forced to buy eggs. Get back to work girls!
BTW I have been meaning to write – The chicken breed is Araucanas not Americanas. Pardon my correction;)

Those 2 red bell peppers were probably $5 alone. I have been avoiding the Econo for the last month because it is too crowded. I have been going to the Selectos in Aguada. Once the tourists leave in a few months, I will go back to the Econo. I really really miss Trader Joe’s, but there is no chance they will build one here.
