Sydney is very mobil these days. She is running all over the place and is capable of going anywhere in the house upstairs and requires constant supervision. When we are out of the house, she loves taking the road less traveled and will find uneven pavement, rocks or grass to walk on versus the sidewalk 100% of the time. She likes 4×4′n.

Our friends Ricky & Lyndsey are down visiting with their son Eli. Eli is 2 months younger than Sydney and they are best friends. They are learning so much from each other and having a blast everyday.

As for the adults, we’re cooking great meals and getting projects done around the house. It’s been great. Because of this love for the steps and exploring our children have, we haven’t been able to keep the front doors open without standing over them to make sure they don’t fall off the edge or down the steps. The solution was simple. We build a baby gate.

Building the baby gate was very simple. We attached lattice to 2×8 on both sides of the door and screwed them into the posts. In the middle where the door is, we attached the lattice with gate laches so we can take the gate down at night to hang out with Monkey and to let adults in and out without having to step over the kids gate.

Nope. I wasn't going to use this chair to climb over the new baby gate!

The Inspector, aka Eli, checking out the handy work at the gate latch. We passed this inspection.

Ricky, Lyndsey, Eli and Sydney kicking it on the front porch.

Here is the baby gate complete.

I am stoked on how the gate turned out. Now we get to have our front door open all day again and it is great to get back onto the front porch for afternoon coffee’s (weekdays).

Sydney has been so much fun lately! She is crawling and exploring every nook of the house every day now. She has a few different play zones where she has her scene laid out perfect. She knows what she can reach, how to cruise around the room connecting furniture and walls and she loves standing at the window, peaking her head out so she can watch the front yard. The window doesn’t have a screen or glass and the wind gusts through there pretty good. It’s like she’s riding a motorcycle without goggles or a helmet.

Yesterday, Sydney discovered how to turn on the cold water on the water cooler. Now, every time cruises by the cooler, she looks up at the spout and goes for a quick pull just to see the water come out. I have a feeling it may be time to raise the water cooler.

We completely baby proofed the back deck (it didn’t take much) and set up a bunch of toys and books back there. It is Sydneys domain. I sit out there with coffee every morning and watch her explore her toys and her new little world.

Here is Sydney standing up using the wall. From here, she’ll cruise all the way around the corner to the other side of the window and look out at me. She’ll chuckle a little, go for the water cooler and then cruise back out to the deck.

So I’ve been freaking out the past week because I’m about to give birth here in Puerto Rico and I’ve been told all sorts of horror stories. First off, I was told to not even attempt a home birth because the midwives here are not very good (two different women told me this and they both attempted home births and ended up at the hospital. Although since then, I have heard other stories on great home births, so I suppose it’s about finding the right midwife.). So, Stefan and I have committed to the birth being at Bella Vista Hospital. I don’t like hospitals to begin with, and now I’m being told that they pump all sorts of drugs into your newborn baby.

I did some research and asked some questions and as a standard procedure after a birth it appears that all babies are given silver nitrate drops in their eyes, a vitamin K shot, a hepatitis B vaccine and a PKU blood test. Well, being that I am the mother, I simply assumed that I could just tell them that I do not want any of those things done to my baby. Unfortunately I was wrong and it takes an actually affidavit from a lawyer for your wishes for your baby’s care to be granted. I’m going to pick my battles here, because I know that the hospital staff will already be annoyed that I’m packing an affidavit, so the only thing I am insisting on is the they NOT shoot up my baby with hepatitis B. We got the affidavit from a lawyer in town today and it cost $25, so it’s not too big of a deal, but they will not release your baby from the hospital without the affidavit (which is totally stupid since this is supposed to be a voluntary vaccine) and they of course do not tell anyone this in hopes of shooting up more babies with this vaccine. I’ve also been told to not let the baby out of my sight because they will probably try to administer the vaccine anyways.

I’m not going to rant about this one too much, but here is why we are choosing not to vaccinate our baby: Babies are born with underdeveloped immune systems and shooting vaccines into them on the first day they are born is not safe (and can cause death, permanent disability, seizures, autism, etc). Hepatitis B is transmitted through exposure to infected blood or bodily fluids, so if your baby is not sexually active or shooting up drugs in an unsafe manner (sharing needles for example), it is virtually impossible for a baby to contract hepatitis B (as long as the mother does not have hepatitis). So why are all hospitals trying to shoot babies up with hepatitis B vaccine? Because the company that manufactures the vaccine, Merck, makes $800 million each year by selling you this vaccine. And they decided that babies should be shot up with it because it’s too hard to get the people who are truely at risk for hepatitis B (prostitutes and drug users) to take/pay for the vaccine. Pretty dirty…

We haven’t posted too many pictures of us lately, so after uploading the last few pics of the master bathroom door, I figured I would post some pictures so ya’ll can check out Summer. In about 7 weeks we’ll have a new addition to the family and we’ll start blasting you guys with photos of our daughter. We don’t know what she looks like yet, but she knows my voice from stories and conversations I have with Summers prego belly. Now, when I read or talk to her she starts moving around and kicking. It’s amazing.

Summer is 32 weeks pregnant in these pictures. The first picture is in the living room right before we went to the beach on Sunday to fish for lobsters, relax and get away from our computers. We have both been working a lot but aren’t complaining. We love our jobs, working at home and talking office politics at the water cooler. Ok, just kidding. Not much politics going on in our office, just work. Without further delay:

If you listen close enough, you’ll here Summer call me a nerd while I am videotaping her getting her blood pressure taken. Well, I have embraced nerdism to its fullest extent working on computers all day, and I guess I am my fathers son because I have no problem busting out the camera and doing what I want to do despite the social pressure of sitting back and not rocking the boat.

Despite sitting around the waiting room for hours, learning new things about our baby along with seeing and hearing her again is amazing. Here is a video I took and edited using iMovie to give you an idea of what a twenty-week check up is all about. Seriously, the only thing I edited out of this was the wait in the waiting room, which I certainly wasn’t recording anyway.

Stefan and I recently went to our doctor in Mayaguez for a routine pregnancy check up and to find out the sex of our baby. Like good patients, we showed up 10 minutes early and checked in for our 11am appointment. We then proceeded to wait. And wait. And wait some more until the doctor finally got around to seeing us nearly 3 HOURS later. By that time, the excitement of finding out the sex of our baby was long gone and we were both just annoyed and sick of waiting. After waiting for so long, the doctor tried to hurry us through the appointment (I got weighed, blood pressure taken and the doctor listened to the babies heartbeat) and she wasn’t even going to do an ultrasound so that we could find out the sex. I insisted being as that is the only reason we were really there (we found out we are having a girl).

Any how, back to my point: doctors appointments in Puerto Rico. Apparently, you’re “appointment” is not an actual appointment at all. The doctor schedules a block of patients for 11am and those patients are supposed to be seen somewhere between 11am and 12pm. The doctor even told us not to bother to show up at the time of our appointment and typically you should show up 30 minutes late and if there are a bunch of people in the waiting room, that you can just leave and reschedule for another time. How stupid is that?! I’ve had much better service at free clinics in on the mainland. SO annoying. I have a feeling that giving birth in Puerto Rico is going to be a nightmare…

Rough Translation of the reception sign:

For your convenience we will be running appointments by the hour. This system will provide the waiting time and comfort in the room. You should come on your assigned hours, not before or after so that all patients can benefit from this system. We appreciate your support and cooperation. If a complication occurs during the day such as a delivery or an emergency, my secretaries will inform you.

And in case you are wondering, no, Stefan is not going to be allowed to name our baby Buck Rodgers…
